// Kickoff of the ECSC2024: opening ceremony held in Turin

On October 8th, the Officine Grandi Riparazioni in Turin hosted the opening ceremony of the European Cybersecurity Challenge (ECSC) 2024, an event that brings together young talents from across Europe and beyond to tackle challenges related to cybersecurity. Promoted by the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA), this initiative aims to enhance cybersecurity talent and connect promising young individuals with leading organizations in the field.
The opening ceremony, moderated by Gianluca Dotti, began with the screening of a video trailer that kicked off the celebrations. Dotti welcomed the participants, highlighting the importance of youth involvement in this ever-evolving domain. Following the welcome, institutional greetings were presented by prominent authorities.
The Prefect of Turin, Donato Giovanni Cafagna, emphasized the significance of the event for the city, showcasing its commitment to advancing cybersecurity. Marco Porcedda, Cybersecurity Counselor for the City of Turin, discussed the importance of developing skills in the sector to face future challenges. Luca Nicoletti, Head of Industrial Service at ACN, outlined the role of the National Cybersecurity Agency in addressing digital threats. Luca Tagliaretti, Executive Director of the ECCC, highlighted the essential contribution of young people in the field of cybersecurity, describing their energy and creativity as engines of change. Adrian Belmonte, Program Manager at ENISA, shared the agency's vision for the future of cybersecurity in Europe, emphasizing the importance of collaboration among various countries. Finally, Professor Alessandro Armando, Director of the CINI Cybersecurity National Lab, delivered his greetings, underscoring the need for synergistic cooperation.
Subsequently, Gaspare Ferraro and Paolo Prinetto, co-chairs of the ECSC 2024 in Turin, presented the event, outlining the activities and challenges participants will face in the coming days. In this competition, national cybersecurity teams, made up of the top 10 talents aged between 14 and 25, will compete in various tasks, reaffirming the importance of teamwork and innovation.
The evening also featured significant contributions from key sponsors of the event. Yuri Rassega, CISO of ENEL and Silver sponsor, discussed the importance of cybersecurity in modern businesses, highlighting how a solid cybersecurity strategy can provide a competitive advantage. Matteo Francesco Feraboli, Head of Cyber and Anti-Fraud Defence Center at Intesa Sanpaolo and Platinum sponsor of the event, shared experiences and best practices in operational continuity management, further enriching the discussion. Roberto Carlo Paleari, Associate Partner at Spike REPLY and Diamond sponsor, talked about the evolution of the cybersecurity landscape, stressing the importance of innovation and adaptation to new challenges.
A highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of the participating teams, accompanied by video projections that showcased the various nationalities and cultures represented. In total, there are 31 official teams from various European countries, along with guest teams from Australia, Canada, Costa Rica, Kosovo, Singapore, and the USA. This environment of international competition and collaboration demonstrated how cybersecurity can unite diverse realities and promote dialogue among different cultures.
The ceremony concluded with final remarks from Gianluca Dotti, who thanked all participants for their presence and emphasized the importance of events like #ECSC2024 in promoting cybersecurity among the new generations. He urged the youth to engage fully and make the most of the opportunities offered by this experience.
With the event just beginning, the world of cybersecurity is poised to experience intense days of competition, learning, and growth. The European Cybersecurity Challenge confirms its role as an important platform for showcasing youth talent, demonstrating that the future of cybersecurity is indeed in the hands of the new generations.
